Welcome to my website. My name is Geoff O’Brien. I am a retired academic. Though I was brought up in Newcastle, my family moved to Washington when I was 11 years old. I was fortunate to be sent to Washington Grammar School and that was the beginning of my academic education. This eventually took me all over the world, During my time as an academic I taught climate change, environmental and disaster management to both under and postgraduates. I supervised nine PhDs and have authored and co-authored
books, academic articles and presentations. I have written reviews of a number of books.
.
After graduating with a degree in electrical and electronic engineering, I worked for two years with the Department of Industry in Westminster. I decided to leave the department and work overseas. I joined an oil exploration company and worked in a number of countries in North Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the USA. Egypt in about 1980. I worked in a number of countries after graduating and leaving my first job in the Civil Service. I worked in Libya, Tunisia, Kuwait, Pakistan, Denmark, Egypt, Thailand and then moved to USA. I was based there for some 7 years and undertook work in Jamaica and Ecuador.

I moved back to UK in 1989 After some seventeen years in the exploration business I decided to return to the UK to take a Master’s degree. I then applied for a job as an academic. I was successful. I then worked for some 29 years as an academic. In1991 I also stood for selection to be a Councillor for the city of Newcastle upon Tyne. I was successfully selected and elected in 1991. I stood until 2019, when I stood down.

Local politics was very interesting. I tried my best to support and implement environmental issues.
My most interesting experience time was when I was selected in 2012 to be Lord Mayor.

In the following I have listed presentations, articles and books that I have been involved in
producing. I am happy to send full details of my publications if you are interested. I also
intend to establish a blog on climate change. I believe that this is the most important
problems we face and I look forward to sharing ideas. On my blog and I
would appreciate your responses.
